Syrups & Elixirs & Tonics, part 2

Plants are a source of healing and nourishment for humanity. From ancient times, people have sought remedies from the rich offerings of the natural world. One such remedy is wild cherry (also known as black cherry) bark, a powerful herb known for its therapeutic properties. Below is one of my favorite syrups.

Wild Cherry Syrup (or Elixir)

Some of the benefits of wild cherry bark

Soothing Cough and Sore Throat – Wild cherry bark (from the Prunus serotina tree) is often used to alleviate coughs and soothe sore throats. Its natural compounds can help calm irritation and promote relief.

Respiratory Support – Due to its expectorant properties, wild cherry bark may assist in loosening phlegm and congestion, making it a valuable ally during respiratory ailments.

Antioxidant Protection – The presence of antioxidants in wild cherry bark helps combat harmful free radicals, thereby supporting overall well-being and promoting a healthy immune system.

The recipe
  • 1 cup of wild cherry bark
  • 4 cups of water
  • 1 cup of honey or maple syrup (adjust to taste)
  • if making an elixir, 1/4 cup of brandy

1. Place the chopped wild cherry bark in a saucepan and add the water.

2. Bring the mixture to a gentle boil, then reduce the heat and let it simmer for at least 30 minutes. This process allows the water to extract the medicinal compounds from the bark. There should be 2 cups left after reducing.

3. After simmering, remove the mixture from heat and let it cool.

4. Strain the liquid through a fine mesh strainer or cheesecloth into a clean glass jar. Let it cool some more.

5. If making an elixir, stir in the brandy now.

6. Add honey or maple syrup to the strained liquid, adjusting the sweetness according to your taste preferences. Stir well.

7. Store the herbal syrup in the refrigerator in a tightly sealed jar for up to several weeks. Because of the alcohol content, the elixir version will last several months.

How to Use

Take a teaspoon or two as needed for cough relief or respiratory support. Remember to consult with a healthcare professional for personalized advice and proper dosage, especially if you have underlying health conditions or are taking medication.

Crafting herbal syrups or elixirs from our herbal allies allows you to tap into their healing power while nurturing a deeper connection with the natural world. With its potential benefits for coughs, sore throats, and respiratory support, this syrup can be a valuable addition to your winter self-care.
